If you’re interested in history and the romance of Scotland’s past, a stay in a Pitlochry B&B will give you easy access to two of Scotland’s most loved castles; Blair Castle and Castle Menzies
Blair Castle
Blair Castle
This 13th century castle was the seat of the Earls of Atholl. Visitors today can enjoy a variety of activities from historic tours to hillwalking in the Atholl estate. Blair Castle was once of tremendous strategic importance, positioned as a gateway to the highland route to Inverness. Now visitors can enjoy magnificent scenery and get a feel for past splendours… as well as dropping into the restaurant for refreshments.
Bonnie Prince Charlie rested here on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746 where the Jacobite dreams of reinstating the Stuart Monarchy floundered. An impressive sight, this castle is slightly schizophrenic in appearance as a result of being transformed from defensive base to “chateau” in the 18 hundreds. Home of the Menzies Clan all proceeds go to its continued restoration.
